Poland has completed the delivery of 212 K9A1 Thunder self-propelled howitzers under the first contract signed with South Korea, significantly strengthening its artillery capability.
The 155 mm systems were assigned to the 1st Masurian Artillery Brigade of the 16th Mechanized Division, according to confirmation from the Polish Ministry of National Defense.
The executive agreement with Hanwha Defense is valued at $2.4 billion and is part of a broader plan initiated in 2022, when Warsaw signed a framework agreement for the acquisition of 672 howitzers. The purchase addresses the need to replenish the country’s artillery inventory following the transfer of equipment to Ukraine amid the conflict with Russia.
In the coming years, the K9A1s will be upgraded to the K9PL standard, a version developed in partnership between the Polish industry and Hanwha. Additionally, around 460 additional units are expected to be locally produced starting in 2026, while a second contract, valued at $2.6 billion, foresees the delivery of 152 more howitzers, further expanding Poland’s K9 Thunder fleet.
