The Peru has launched a large-scale military modernization program aimed at fully renewing its tanks and armored vehicles, many of which have been in service since the 1970s.
The plan will be carried out in partnership with Hyundai Rotem and STX from South Korea, combining the initial purchase of equipment with future domestic production.
Between 2026 and 2028, the Peruvian Army will receive 99 K808 armored vehicles and 46 K2 tanks from South Korea, accompanied by training and maintenance packages. In a second phase, starting in 2029, the country will begin local production of 181 K808 vehicles and 104 K2 tanks under license, with about 30 percent of the components provided by Peruvian companies. The assembly lines will be installed with an investment of approximately 270 million dollars from Hyundai Rotem.
The Peruvian government expects the project, which will run until 2040, to strengthen industrial autonomy in defense, generate thousands of jobs, and stimulate the economy. For Army officials, the initiative follows successful examples from South Korea and emphasizes the need to reduce external dependency in a globally unstable environment.
