The South African group Paramount is trying to gain a foothold in the booming Ukrainian armored vehicle market with an adapted version of the Mbombe 4, renamed OWL.
The proposal is to offer the Ukrainian Armed Forces a locally produced platform, tailored to the real battlefield requirements, through a partnership with the Ukrainian company MAC HUB.
The vehicle was modified based on the experience accumulated by Ukrainian troops during the conflict, prioritizing resistance to artillery shrapnel, small arms fire, and mine explosions. The model is derived from the Kalyani M4 variant, manufactured in India under license, but it has undergone structural and protection modifications specific to the war scenario in Ukraine.
Weighing about 15 tons, the OWL stands out for meeting the STANAG Level 4 protection standard against mines, being capable of withstanding the explosion of up to 10 kilograms of TNT beneath the hull. Its “V” shaped design and reinforced armor, made of special European steel, allow it to withstand fire from 7.62mm caliber machine guns and rifles, including incendiary armor-piercing ammunition.
This initiative marks another chapter in the long-standing cooperation between Paramount and the Ukrainian defense industry, which already includes projects involving armored vehicles and helicopters. The company’s interest reflects a larger trend: manufacturers outside the Europe-USA axis see Ukraine as one of the most dynamic markets in the world for military equipment tailored to high-intensity combat.
