Norway will send F-35 fighters to Poland for a new NATO air policing mission starting in October.

Norwegian pilots will be ready to intercept and, if necessary, shoot down drones and Russian aircraft that violate Polish airspace, with authorization from the alliance command. The goal is to strengthen the defense of NATO’s eastern flank amidst rising tensions with Moscow.

According to Norway’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Andreas Flåm, the mission is defensive in nature and aims to protect allied territory from potential aerial threats. He emphasized that the Supreme Allied Command Europe will decide on the appropriate measures in each case, using various resources to avoid provocations. Flåm also highlighted that the military presence of member countries in the region bordering Russia has been significantly expanded.

This will be the second mission of Norwegian F-35s in Poland this year. The first took place between January and the European summer and was later taken over by the Netherlands, which also sent F-35 fighters to support arms transport to Ukraine and patrol NATO airspace. During this operation, a Dutch F-35 even shot down a Russian drone violating Polish territory, an unprecedented achievement for the country.
