Norwegian authorities detained a group of six foreigners after drones were launched near the Ramsund naval base, one of the country’s main military installations.

The individuals, described as tourists, were fined and had two devices seized, while police launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the case.

The incident comes amid growing concerns about possible espionage activities in the region. Although there is still no confirmed direct link, authorities are considering the possibility of involvement with Russian intelligence services. In recent months, reports have pointed to an increased presence of suspects near the border and attempts to enter Norwegian territory via civilian vessels.

In response to this scenario, the Norwegian government announced plans to reinforce its military presence in the northern part of the country, with the goal of doubling troop numbers by 2032. The measure is part of a broader strategy to strengthen regional defense, especially along the 198-kilometer border with Russia, where new surveillance systems, physical barriers, and drone monitoring have already been implemented.

Similar cases have also been reported in other parts of Europe. Investigations indicate that drones used to monitor military installations may have been launched from civilian ships. Analysis of maritime tracking data revealed suspicious patterns involving vessels that remained at sea for long periods or carried out unusual maneuvers, including the cargo ships HAV Dolphin and HAV Snapper.
