Last Monday (23), Northrop Grumman announced that its new “fighter drone” YFQ-48A has received the official name Talon Blue.

According to The War Zone, Northrop Grumman first revealed the drone in December of last year. At the time, it was referred to simply as “Project Talon.”

Later in December, the U.S. Air Force gave it the formal designation YFQ-48A and described it as a “strong candidate” to be part of its future fleets under the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) project.

Currently, General AtomicsYFQ-42A and Anduril’s YFQ-44A are the projects formally in development as part of Increment 1 of the Air Force’s CCA program. Northrop Grumman may now be under contract for Increment 2 of the program, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.

According to a press release issued by Northrop Grumman last Monday (23), “the designation of the YFQ-48A Talon Blue within the Air Force’s CCA program underscores the strategic alignment between Northrop Grumman’s manufacturing agility and the Air Force’s acquisition goals for affordable, cutting-edge technology.”

“The aircraft’s design delivers mission versatility through advanced modular manufacturing techniques that reduce part count and overall weight—shortening production timelines without sacrificing capability,” the company statement added.

The statement did not provide a clear explanation of the meaning behind the new name Talon Blue, but the company had previously said that the project name was a tribute to the T-38 Talon trainer jet. “And it also sounds cool,” said Tom Jones, president of Northrop Grumman’s Aeronautical Systems sector.

As for the addition of Blue to the name, this could be another homage—this time to Northrop’s highly successful demonstrator Tacit Blue (also known as Whale), which revolutionized the U.S. understanding of stealth technology.

This tribute makes a great deal of sense because, as noted by TWZ, the YFQ-48A is clearly optimized for low observability. It also shares many similar features with the Tacit Blue, including its overall layout.

Beyond the YFQ-48A, Northrop Grumman is also describing Project Talon as “a comprehensive portfolio of modular, affordable, and rapidly deployable aircraft that meet customers’ autonomy needs.”

This portfolio includes Talon IQ, formerly known as Beacon, a “next-generation autonomous test-bench ecosystem” that leverages the Prism autonomy package and the Vanguard Model 437 jet from Scaled Composites, a wholly owned subsidiary of Northrop Grumman that was also involved in the development of the Talon Blue.

In addition to potential inclusion in Increment 2 of the U.S. Air Force’s CCA program, the company could also present the YFQ-48A to potential foreign customers. According to TWZ, the global market space for CCA-type drones—such as the aircraft now dubbed Talon Blue—is steadily growing.
