Ukraine has unveiled a new autonomous interceptor drone developed specifically to counter the Shahed kamikaze drones used by Russia.

Produced by the Ukrainian company MaXon Systems, the system costs approximately US$3,500 per unit and has already been successfully used in combat in the Kharkiv region, according to a report by Defender Media.

According to its developers, the interceptor features a fixed-wing configuration, can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph), and operate within a radius of approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles).

The system uses GPS-independent navigation and incorporates terminal guidance based on artificial intelligence developed in partnership with a Dutch company, allowing it to locate and strike targets even in environments with heavy electronic interference.

The announcement comes amid a surge in Russian long-range drone attacks. In May 2026 alone, Moscow launched more than 8,000 Shahed drones and similar models against Ukraine, the highest volume recorded since the war began.

The main advantage of the new system is its cost. While a Shahed drone is estimated to cost around US$35,000 to produce, many of the missiles traditionally used to intercept it cost hundreds of thousands—or even millions—of dollars per launch. The growing use of interceptor drones reflects the search for more economical solutions to counter mass drone attacks.

Ukraine has been rapidly expanding its so-called “small air defense” network, based on interceptor drones and automated systems. Ukrainian officials say the success rate of these systems against Shahed drones has doubled in recent months, making them one of the key pillars of the country’s air defense strategy.
