The Hai Kun (SS-711), the first Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) of the Taiwanese Navy, launched the Mk48 torpedo for the first time, revealed Taiwanese company CSBC Corporation.

The test was conducted last Wednesday (6) and involved the submarine launching two heavy-weight Mk48 Mod 6 Advanced Technology (AT) torpedoes from two of its six 533 mm torpedo tubes.

The aim was to evaluate whether the combat system could detect and track the intended targets, as well as generate a firing solution for the torpedoes and guide them toward the targets.

In a video shared on Thursday (7) by CSBC, it is possible to see that the wire of the Mk48 Mod 6AT was clearly visible after leaving the torpedo tube. The two torpedoes were a training variant.

The two Mk48s fired by the Hai Kun submarine were later recovered by support ships with the help of an S-70C(M) helicopter, which marked the positions of both torpedoes. The submarine returned to port after leaving the shipyard for approximately 12 hours.

Following this weapons test, CSBC will continue to calibrate and prepare the Hai Kun for dock maintenance, paving the way for further follow-up tests.
