The UK’s Royal Marine Commandos are now faster and more effective in Arctic ice and snow operations, thanks to the arrival of the new Lynx Brutal Over Snow (OSRV) snowmobiles.

Manufactured by a Finnish subsidiary of Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), these machines are part of a £9 million investment to modernize and expand the Commando Force’s fleet.
Enhanced Mobility for Extreme Conditions
With a total of 159 units acquired, the new snowmobiles offer greater power, agility, and load capacity, allowing commandos to strike harder and deeper in hostile Arctic territories. At a time when Russian influence in the region is increasing, this upgrade ensures a faster and more effective response in extreme conditions.
The new platforms began arriving at Camp Viking, the UK Commando Force’s winter base in northern Norway, in January 2025. Since then, they have been tested by the Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SRS) of the 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group, based in Plymouth. This squadron, specialized in Arctic warfare, is tasked with operating at the forefront of allied forces, often deep within enemy territory.

Tests and Positive Evaluations
So far, the evaluations of the new snowmobiles have been highly positive. According to an SRS operator, who cannot be identified for operational reasons, the platform has stood out for its ease of use and maneuverability, being considered the most agile ever used by the unit.
“A more powerful platform but with a lighter frame allows for the transport of heavier sleds without compromising performance,” the operator explained. In addition, the new units feature better nighttime performance, extra suspension options adjustable by the operator, and more aggressive tracks, providing greater traction and flotation in deep snow.
Fast Delivery and Continuous Support
Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) was responsible for ensuring the delivery of the new snowmobiles in less than nine months after the contract was signed. The agreement also includes technical support and post-project maintenance services to ensure the equipment remains operational throughout its lifespan.
With these new acquisitions, the Royal Marines strengthen their combat and survival capabilities in extreme environments, consolidating their presence and mobility along NATO’s contested northern frontier.
