American platform “The Best One on the Planet” launches initiative highlighting vehicles once common and now nearly extinct
NORTH CONWAY, New Hampshire – The website The Best One on the Planet, dedicated to enthusiasts of vintage and rare automobiles, has released its first “Endangered Automotive Species List,” spotlighting models that once dominated the streets but have now become nearly impossible to find.
According to COO Steve Haas, the idea came from countless user submissions showcasing unique examples of everyday cars from past decades. “If you’ve been following the automotive world long enough, you’ve noticed how many models have disappeared. Dodge and Plymouth Neons, for example, were everywhere — now I can’t remember the last time I saw one on the road,” said Haas.

Co-founder Matt Lewis explained that the goal is to recognize the rarity of vehicles once considered disposable. “A Ferrari 250 GTO is rare because only 39 exist, but how many Isuzu Impulse cars are still running worldwide? Maybe fewer,” he joked. “We want to shine a light on these forgotten cars that defined an era, even if only for their simplicity.”

Hunt for the “extinct” Ford Aspire
In addition to the main list, the team launched a unique challenge: to find a working Ford Aspire (1993–1997). The model, built by Kia and sold under the Ford brand, has completely vanished from American roads since 2005.

The first person to provide reliable “proof of life” of a registered and running Aspire will receive a set of premium Cocomats car floor mats.
List of “Endangered Automotive Species”
- 1977 Renault Le Car – Prone to rust and suffered from a lack of parts after Renault exited the U.S. market. Fewer than 50 are believed to still be operational in North America.
- 1987 Isuzu Impulse RS Turbo – Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the sporty coupe shared components with the Chevy Chevette. No examples have been spotted on the road since the 1990s.
- 1980 Plymouth Arrow Pickup – Built by Mitsubishi for Chrysler, it was one of the first “captive imports.” Today, it is rarely seen outside California.
- 1981 Audi 5000S Diesel – Popular in the 1980s, it has disappeared from U.S. roads. Only six units have ever been auctioned on the Bring a Trailer website.
- 1977 Chevrolet LUV – Another model produced by Isuzu. Despite its durable engine, corrosion destroyed most examples outside the dry climate of Southern California.
- 1996 Ford Aspire – A small Korean hatchback sold under the Ford name. Considered “virtually extinct.”
Between nostalgia and preservation

According to the founders, The Best One on the Planet was created to be a fun and educational space for collectors and enthusiasts. The project is operated by BOOT-P Media, LLC, based in Michigan, and co-founded by automotive enthusiasts Peter Zawadski, Matt Lewis, and Steve Haas.
