The legendary Lada Niva may finally get a new generation. Patent images filed by AvtoVAZ have revealed the design of the future Russian SUV, which is expected to reach the market around 2028 after years of uncertainty caused by Renault leaving Russia.
The new model keeps the off-road spirit of the original Niva but adopts far more modern styling, closely resembling current Dacia generations. The project was originally launched during the partnership between Renault and AvtoVAZ, using the CMF-B platform, the same architecture used in the Dacia Duster.
The images show an SUV with high ground clearance, robust underbody protection, reinforced bumpers, and details designed for off-road use.

The headlights appear integrated into the front grille and recessed into the bodywork to reduce damage on rough trails, while the horizontal taillights reference the classic Niva launched in the 1970s.

On the side, the model features hidden rear door handles integrated into the C-pillar, roof rails, and widened fenders. Estimated length is around 4.3 meters, very close to the current Duster.
Although the patents indicate progress in the project, there is still no official confirmation regarding the launch. There are also no details about engines or trim versions, although European media outlets suggest the SUV would likely struggle to meet current European Union emissions regulations.
Launched in 1977, the Lada Niva remains an icon of Russia’s toughest roads

The Lada Niva is one of Russia’s most iconic vehicles and a symbol of the Soviet automotive industry. Originally launched in 1977 by AvtoVAZ, the model became famous for its simple construction, permanent 4×4 drivetrain, and ability to handle poor roads, snow, mud, and remote rural areas.
In Russia, the Niva has maintained a strong presence for decades precisely because it combines low cost, relatively simple maintenance, and rugged durability. It is used by ordinary drivers, rural workers, public services, and residents of remote regions where more modern vehicles can be too expensive or less practical.
Currently, the model remains on sale in the Russian market in versions such as the Lada Niva Legend and Lada Niva Travel. Lada itself describes the Niva Legend as a compact vehicle with strong off-road capability and a 1.7-liter engine, while the Niva Travel is presented as a more updated interpretation of the classic utility vehicle.
