The new Audi S5 has drawn attention for its significant weight increase compared to previous models.

Replacing the S4 Sedan and the S5 Sportback, the European model weighs 1,950 kg, 155 kg more than the old European S4 with a diesel engine and 190 kg more than the S4 sold in the United States, which is equipped with a gasoline engine.
Additionally, the new S5, now available only as a hatchback, surpasses the weight of the previous S5 Sportback by 170 kg.
The situation is even more striking when considering the S5 wagon, sold outside the U.S., which weighs 1,965 kg. While plug-in hybrid versions have not been announced yet, they are expected to increase the weight further, especially if they come with V6 engines.
This weight growth follows a market trend often attributed to stricter safety regulations and the inclusion of more technology in vehicles.
Even so, competitors like the Mercedes-AMG C63 plug-in hybrid, sold in Europe, are even heavier, with the sedan reaching 2,111 kg and the wagon 2,145 kg, despite using smaller four-cylinder engines. In comparison, BMW keeps its models lighter, with the M3 Touring weighing 1,865 kg.
However, with the prospect of a plug-in hybrid RS5, Audi seems to continue betting on more robust vehicles to meet emission and technology demands.
