The new Netflix series about Ayrton Senna brings a high level of realism, requiring the construction of faithful replicas of the cars that the Brazilian F1 driver used throughout his career.
Netflix hired the Argentine company Crespi, specialized in car and racing vehicle manufacturing, to produce 22 functional vehicles for the filming. These models represent all of Senna’s cars, from Formula Ford to the Williams FW16, in which he suffered the fatal crash in 1994.
Each car was customized for the filming, with Crespi taking care of the technical details, such as bodywork, engines, and suspensions, adapted to ensure the action scenes were realistic.
However, despite being visually identical to the originals, the cars do not offer the same performance, as the racing engines were adjusted to achieve the minimum necessary for filming. Additionally, to ensure an immersive experience, sound technicians installed microphones in the original cars, replicating the authentic sounds of Formula 1 from the 1980s and 1990s.
The actors also underwent intensive training to prepare for their roles, with weekly karting sessions to practice driving maneuvers and the use of the cockpits.
The series, which consists of six episodes, chronicles Senna’s career and is one of Netflix’s major releases for the end of 2024, promising to please motorsport fans.
