The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has ordered two new Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft to reinforce the Multinational Multi-Role Tanker Transport Fleet (MMF), increasing the total number of units to 12.
According to a statement published on Airbus’ official website, deliveries are scheduled for 2028 and 2029. The fleet expansion is a direct result of Sweden and Finland recently joining NATO and the MMF program—a move that strengthens European strategic autonomy and the Alliance’s collective defense capabilities.

In addition to the existing operational bases in Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Cologne (Germany), a third forward operating base is planned in Denmark. This new hub will enhance air mobility in the Nordic countries, boost readiness for medical evacuations, and optimize aerial refueling capacity in the region. The initiative expands NATO’s strategic flexibility in Northern Europe.

The Airbus A330 MRTT is a multifunctional platform that combines aerial refueling, strategic transport of troops and cargo, and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) capabilities. With a fuel capacity of up to 111 tons, the aircraft is ideal for long-range missions and tactical support anywhere in Europe and beyond.
Thanks to its wide-body fuselage, the A330 MRTT can carry up to 300 troops or 45 tons of payload. The model can also be equipped with full medical kits, including stretchers and intensive care units.
By 2025, Airbus had already produced over 60 aircraft of this type, with orders exceeding 70 units—operated by 11 countries and one NATO multinational alliance. The growing demand highlights the strategic importance of the A330 MRTT as a versatile and reliable solution for Atlantic Alliance missions.
