From June 16 to 27, 2025, NATO is conducting the multinational air exercise Atlantic Trident 25 in Finnish airspace.

With the participation of more than 40 fighter jets and around 1,000 military personnel from four countries, this edition marks Finland’s debut as the host nation, reflecting its recent entry into the military alliance. The operation brings together advanced fighter aircraft from the US, UK, France, and Finland, along with support aircraft, focusing on training the integration of different generation technologies and preparing allied forces for complex air combat scenarios.

The exercise is coordinated by the United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) and aims primarily to enhance tactical capabilities, build trust among allies, and demonstrate joint military strength.

Holding the operation on Finnish territory, which shares a long border with Russia, is a strategic decision that reinforces NATO’s presence in a sensitive region, highlighting Finland’s growing role in collective defense and regional deterrence.

The accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, driven by the war in Ukraine, represents one of the most significant geopolitical shifts since the end of the Cold War. With their strategic locations and advanced military capabilities, both countries significantly strengthen the alliance’s position in the Baltic Sea and the Arctic.

Atlantic Trident 25 symbolizes this new phase, with greater integration among allies and enhanced defensive capabilities in previously vulnerable areas.
