Four NATO member countries, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Norway, have announced the purchase of up to five MQ-4C Triton drones, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, to expand the alliance’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

The announcement was made during the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, and the new aircraft will strengthen the fleet of the Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) program, based in Sigonella, Italy.

Designed for long-duration maritime surveillance missions, the MQ-4C Triton can remain airborne for more than 24 hours at altitudes above 15 kilometers. Equipped with long-range sensors, the system expands NATO’s ability to monitor vast ocean areas, identify threats in advance, protect strategic shipping routes and support operations in hard-to-reach regions such as the Arctic and the far north of Europe.

The program will be implemented by a transatlantic industrial consortium. Northrop Grumman will be responsible for manufacturing the aircraft, while Airbus Defence and Space and other European companies will provide ground systems, infrastructure, data management, command and control and operational support. According to NATO, the initiative strengthens cooperation between the European and North American defense industries and expands the capabilities of the alliance’s ISR force.

Derived from the RQ-4 Global Hawk, the MQ-4C Triton was developed specifically for maritime operations, incorporating a reinforced structure, lightning protection and de-icing systems to operate in adverse weather conditions. In addition to a maritime search radar with 360-degree coverage, the drone is equipped with electro-optical and infrared sensors, as well as signals intelligence (SIGINT) equipment. The aircraft is currently operated by the United States Navy alongside the P-8 Poseidon and has also been selected by Australia, which is acquiring four units of the model.
