Sales decline attributed to cost and weather
The Ford Mustang is on the decline. Sales of the last remaining muscle car have plummeted so far in 2025, dropping 31.6% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to sales figures released by the company.
In the first three months of 2024, Ford moved only 13,707 units of the Mustang. This year, that number dropped to just 9,377 units. Sales of the gas-powered Mustang are so low that the fully electric Mustang Mach-E is currently outselling it. Ford has moved 11,607 of the crossovers so far.
Rumor has it that the decline in sales is due to cost. The base Ecoboost coupe starts at $33,515. While that may seem reasonable, most people can no longer justify having a second vehicle, as wages haven’t kept up with inflation — and owning a two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupe as a sole car is no longer viable for the average middle-class American.
The V8 version, the GT coupe, which is the cheapest eight-cylinder trim, starts at $47,055. At that price point, the Mustang has to compete with rivals like the Nissan Z, Toyota Supra, and BMW Z4.
Another factor might be the weather. According to *The Drive*, the U.S. experienced a particularly cold start to the year. Low temperatures don’t exactly motivate people to visit dealerships or buy sports cars.
The return of the Shelby GT500 might be what the Mustang needs to bounce back. Rumors about the high-end trim arriving in 2026 surfaced after what appeared to be a leaked UAW document revealed plans to produce a supercharged V8 dubbed “Legend” for a future GT500.
However, Ford’s other vehicles haven’t been doing well either. Sales of the Explorer and Expedition dropped 19.1% and 37.5%, respectively. Sales of the Maverick, E-Series van, and Transit also declined year over year. The F-Series line rose 24.5%, although F-150 Lightning sales dropped 7.2%. Overall, the Ford brand is down 1.2% in 2025.
