Belgium plans to deploy the MQ-9B SkyGuardian on its first operational missions starting in 2026, with an initial focus on NATO naval operations.

The remotely piloted aircraft system is expected to support Operation Sea Guardian, a mission designed to enhance maritime surveillance and strengthen security actions in the Mediterranean Sea.

The SkyGuardian deployment is set to take place from Italy and will be integrated with other Belgian contributions to NATO, such as participation in the AWACS fleet and the assignment of officers to the mission headquarters in the United Kingdom. Brussels is also evaluating synergies with the European operation EUNAVFOR Aspides, active in the Red Sea, and plans to deploy the frigate BNS Leopold I in the second half of 2026.

The Belgian Air Force received its first MQ-9B aircraft in September and aims to achieve initial operational capability by the end of 2026. Although not a dedicated naval variant, the SkyGuardian already features sensors adapted to the maritime environment and is expected to receive new capabilities in the future under a $589.7 million investment plan through 2034, including advanced sensors focused on surveillance and anti-submarine warfare.
