Morris Commercial unveiled the latest pre-production version of the Morris JE during the EE West Show in Cheltenham, United Kingdom, and confirmed an important roadmap for the return of one of the most traditional names in British commercial vehicles. The brand plans to begin pilot production in 2027 and move to commercial-scale production in 2028.

The detail that draws the most attention is the Morris JE’s proposal: it does not want to be just an electric work van. Inspired by the classic Morris J-Type, launched in 1948, the new JE bets on a nostalgic look combined with modern technology, sustainable materials and a strategy aimed at companies that want to turn their own vehicle into an extension of the brand.

According to the company, the model was created for businesses that want more than transportation. The idea is for the van to function as a mobile showcase, whether for cafés, premium stores, events, festivals, hospitality, artisanal services or urban deliveries. For this reason, Morris Commercial treats the JE as a tool for visual identity, customer experience and commercial differentiation.

Beneath the retro design, the Morris JE brings an unusual architecture to the segment. The company says the vehicle will have the world’s first commercial monocoque body made with recycled carbon fiber. The package also includes a lightweight aluminum chassis, payload capacity of up to 1,000 kg, gross vehicle weight of 2,500 kg and cargo volume of up to 6.0 m³.

Another important point is electrification. The Morris JE promises a range of up to 300 miles, around 483 km, as well as charging from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes. The brand also mentions an ultra-fast charging option capable of completing the same process in just 10 minutes, depending on the configuration and available infrastructure.

The modular platform was also designed to go beyond the traditional van. According to Morris Commercial, the JE’s base could give rise to pickup, minibus and camper versions, expanding the model’s appeal to different customer profiles.

The company also highlights progress in engineering validation, industrial planning, supply chain integration and preparation for modern safety, battery, software and cybersecurity regulations. The acquisition of Prodrive Composites capabilities is also seen as a strategic step, as it gives Morris Commercial greater control over one of the project’s core technologies: composite manufacturing.

Pilot production is expected to take place in 2027 at the composites facility in Milton Keynes. Commercial-scale production, meanwhile, is expected to be carried out in St Athan, Wales, from 2028.

Even before reaching the streets, the Morris JE is already attracting interest. The manufacturer says it has recorded more than 7,000 expressions of interest from potential customers in different markets, including the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Initial demand comes mainly from premium retailers, hospitality companies, artisanal food and beverage businesses, creative and sports sectors, and specialized services.

For Morris Commercial founder and CEO Dr. Qu Li, the JE represents a new vision for commercial vehicles, in which work capability and emotional connection go hand in hand. The company’s chairman, Professor John Miles, said the new prototype shows the brand’s progress in development, technology, partnerships and industrial preparation.

More than an electric van, the Morris JE is trying to occupy a curious space in the market: that of a commercial vehicle with a classic soul, design appeal and a marketing function on wheels. If it meets the announced schedule, the model could become one of the most distinctive launches in the electric van segment in the coming years.
