A mechanic who received a Nissan truck at his shop was completely shocked when he saw what was causing a “red light” under the vehicle.

The case was shared by the shop Bratz Tire and Auto. They reported that the owner brought the truck to the shop after noticing a mysterious “red light” under the vehicle.

“I started looking around and… Ah! There you are! Yeah, I don’t think this is an LED,” said the unidentified mechanic as he crouched down and realized that the exhaust system was hot and glowing red.

Specifically, it appears the issue is with the catalytic converter. While this part is designed to withstand high temperatures as it burns harmful emissions before exhaust gases exit the tailpipe, it should never glow like this.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), such issues increase the risk of fire and explosions and should be addressed immediately once the driver becomes aware of the problem.

But what causes this phenomenon? The most common cause is the presence of unburned fuel in the exhaust system. When fuel that should have burned in the engine reaches the converter, it ignites there, drastically raising temperatures.

This, in turn, can be caused by faulty spark plugs, failed ignition coils, defective fuel injectors, or oxygen sensor malfunctions.

Burning oil also contributes to the problem. When piston rings or valve seals are worn, oil can reach the catalytic converter, impair its function, and concentrate heat, which can lead to internal clogging.

In some cases, the converter itself is simply failing or clogged, which occurs more frequently in high-mileage vehicles. When exhaust flow is restricted, heat rises quickly, and the glowing metal becomes the visible symptom of this restriction.

Repairs can cost between US$1,500 and US$3,000. However, it’s important to emphasize that replacing the converter without addressing the root cause, such as ignition or fuel delivery issues, often leads to repeated failures. Therefore, it’s crucial to assess with your mechanic what is causing the problem before rushing to replace your exhaust.
