A man is gaining millions of views after posting a video teaching internet users exactly what to do if their cars lose control.
Aaron Brown shared the clip on his TikTok profile. He began by explaining that he had recently received the news that a childhood friend had died in a car accident because her vehicle would not stop accelerating.
“This made me really sad because I know that if I had been in that car, she would still be alive. That’s why I want to tell you what you can do to survive if your vehicle becomes out of control,” Brown said.
“If your car’s accelerator gets stuck, if the pedal is jammed, do not try to turn the steering wheel. Your engine is out of control. It is stuck accelerating for some reason. Your transmission is not.”
“If you have a runaway car, to save your life, grab the gear lever and put it into neutral. Your engine will rev high, doing whatever it wants, but it won’t be powering the wheels,” he instructed.
Only then, when the vehicle begins to slow down, can you brake, pull over, and turn off the car. “Please do not try to drive a runaway accelerating vehicle. You will die,” Brown added.
His video has already gained over 19 million views and more than 3 million likes, along with thousands of comments thanking him for the valuable advice, while others took the opportunity to share their own tips.
“It’s important to note that the engine will become extremely loud as soon as you put it in neutral. This is ‘normal’ in this situation,” advised one TikTok user. “Do not turn off the car until it has fully stopped. If you turn it off, you will lose the ability to steer because the power steering will not work,” warned another.
It is rare for a vehicle to lose control in this manner, and this phenomenon generally occurs with older diesel engines with poor maintenance. But just because it is rare doesn’t mean mechanical failures of this kind can’t happen.
Most automotive experts agreed with Brown’s advice. Putting the car in neutral, waiting for it to slow down, then stopping and turning it off is the safest way out of this situation.
“Her death is very tragic, and I just wanted to share this so that maybe someone sees it and learns how to save their own life. It takes only two seconds: grab the gear lever and put it in neutral,” Brown concluded.
