A man is drawing attention from internet users after giving a very useful recommendation to preserve car components during winter days.

In a video posted on his TikTok profile, content creator Del suggested that people should leave their cars running for a while before hitting the road on cold days.

“One more thing for all of you. I know you’re just girls,” he joked, specifically referring to the women watching him. “Giving a little advice to all of you before you [ruin] your cars this winter.”

“Let that [car] run for at least 10, 15 minutes before leaving, gangster, or that starter motor on the alternator is going to go […] out, [I swear on] my mom,” he added at the end of the clip, which has already received over 780,000 views.

In the comments, however, a debate arose over the time suggested by Del. “10 whole minutes, United States style?” joked one TikTok user. “[The car] has enough time for me to pick my Spotify playlist,” added another.

Del’s suggestion may be useful for older vehicles, but it does not apply to modern cars. Vehicles built before the mid-1990s used carburetors, which mechanically mixed air and fuel and required several minutes to reach the proper operating temperature. Without adequate warm-up, carbureted engines can stall or run poorly.

However, modern engines only need about 30 seconds of warm-up time, according to AAA. That’s roughly the time it takes to buckle your seatbelt and adjust the mirrors. During this brief period, the oil pump circulates oil to all critical engine components.

Even in extreme cold conditions (below freezing), AAA explained that leaving the car running for two or three minutes should be sufficient. If you need to clear snow from the windshield, windows, and mirrors, having the car running during this time will already help a lot.
