A man died in Las Vegas while napping in a car that was stolen from the parking lot of a Walmart Supercenter on Saturday (11). He was resting while his partner was shopping.

“The man in the passenger seat woke up to another man essentially kidnapping him,” said Lieutenant Monique Rodriguez of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).

According to police, a man in his 50s allegedly entered the black Hyundai Sonata, which was unlocked, and drove off from the parking lot at high speed with the passenger still inside the car.

The suspect collided with a silver minivan carrying two occupants, causing the van to spin in the street. The stolen car then crashed into a pole and a rock.

“This crash resulted in the death of the passenger,” Rodriguez said, adding that the driver of the van suffered minor injuries, while the van’s passenger was not injured.

The lieutenant said the suspect is in custody and will likely face manslaughter charges. Police confirmed that the man allegedly stole the car in a “crime of opportunity.”
