Lithuania has strengthened its air defense capabilities with the acquisition of a new batch of Giraffe 1X radars, produced by Saab.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the equipment has been successfully integrated into existing systems, improving efficiency in identifying threats in the airspace.
The country is also advancing the creation of an integrated defense structure, covering everything from detection to target neutralization. The initiative takes into account lessons learned from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as highlighted by Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas.
Compact and three-dimensional, the Giraffe 1X is capable of monitoring airspace in real time, including detecting drones. Its versatility allows operation on different platforms, such as fixed bases, mobile units, and even vessels.

With a range of up to 75 kilometers, the radar significantly expands the country’s air coverage. The move follows a regional trend, as Latvia also received similar systems the previous year, strengthening surveillance in the Baltic.
