Lithuania has announced the purchase of the anti-drone system Merops AS-3 Surveyor, developed by the U.S. company Perennial Autonomy, reinforcing its air defense strategy amid the rise of drone-based threats.

The package includes 48 interceptor drones and is part of an accelerated process approved by the government, highlighting the country’s urgency to adapt to the modern warfare scenario observed in Ukraine.

The acquired system includes two types of drones: half equipped with thermal sensors and the other half with radio frequency sensors, both supported by training infrastructure and technical assistance. In addition, the contract covers operator training and integration with radar systems, expanding the capacity to monitor and respond to small aerial threats.

According to Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas, the priority is to ensure an efficient air defense capable of detecting and neutralizing risks quickly. The choice of Merops is due to the system having already been tested in combat in Ukraine, demonstrating effectiveness against attack drones such as the Shahed models, while also offering a more cost-effective alternative compared to traditional missiles.

The decision to accelerate the procurement process also reflects a regional trend. Eastern European countries and NATO members have been reducing bureaucratic barriers to strengthen their military capabilities in response to the growing use of drones in conflicts. In this context, more affordable and efficient solutions, such as interceptor drones, have gained prominence as a strategic response to emerging threats.
