The LHD Trieste, the largest warship of the Italian Navy since World War II, received its Battle Flag in a ceremony held in Trieste on October 26, 2025, coinciding with the 71st anniversary of the city’s return to Italy.
The flag was handed over by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza to the ship’s commander, Captain Francesco Marzi, symbolizing the Trieste’s full entry into active service, turning the vessel into a sovereign extension of the country at sea and reinforcing the historic connection with the city that gives it its name.
Built by Fincantieri at the Castellammare di Stabia and Muggiano shipyards, the Trieste is 245 meters long, weighs 33,000 tons, and can carry over 1,000 people. The amphibious assault ship operates as an aircraft carrier and command platform, capable of hosting F-35B aircraft and helicopters, and features a floodable dock and large vehicle deck. It serves as the flagship of the Italian Navy’s Amphibious Task Group, complementing the strike capability of the aircraft carrier ITS Cavour.
The ceremony was attended by government and military authorities, including Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, and was broadcast live on the Navy’s YouTube channel. Representing a milestone of national pride, the event highlighted the strategic importance of the ship, considered a symbol of Italian technological excellence, and reinforced the Navy’s position among the world’s most advanced maritime forces.
