Leonardo UK is close to signing a contract to provide six additional AW159 Wildcat anti-submarine warfare helicopters to the Philippine Navy, in a deal estimated at around USD 745 million.

The Philippine government is looking to expand its helicopter fleet for new warships while maintaining the same platform already in operation, to avoid adjustments to equipment and systems. Sources indicate Leonardo is the most likely supplier for the new batch.

The first two AW159s were delivered in 2019, complementing the Rizal-class frigates built by HD Hyundai. The new contract provides that the six additional helicopters will be allocated to the Malvar-class frigates, also from HD Hyundai, as well as two future frigates expected to have contracts signed later this year. The project will be executed through a “negotiated purchase” based on inventory, valued at approximately USD 585 million, excluding armament.

The Philippine AW159s are equipped with Thales Compact FLASH dipping sonars, Blue Shark lightweight torpedoes, and Spike NLOS missiles. Thales has already established a local maintenance center and plans to create a training and certification center for national capability under the Self-Reliant Defense Posture initiative.

This investment is part of the Philippines’ plan to allocate around USD 35 billion over the next decade to strengthen its military capabilities, in response to rising tensions in the South China Sea.
