The legendary Mercedes-Benz W 196 R, considered one of the most iconic Formula 1 cars in history, is being auctioned by RM Sotheby’s.

Created in the 1950s, when automakers had more freedom in design, this model featured an aerodynamic body known as the “Stromlinienwagen“. With a remarkable history, this particular example made its debut at the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix, winning with Juan Manuel Fangio, and ended its racing career with Sir Stirling Moss at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix.

After its racing career, Mercedes-Benz kept the 10 W 196 models but eventually donated four of them, including chassis number 9, which is now being auctioned. Since then, the car has been cared for by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation, where it underwent two restorations. It is the only “Stromlinienwagen” ever offered for sale to private collectors and one of the four remaining models with an aerodynamic body.

RM Sotheby’s estimates the car’s value at over $55 million. This sale comes two years after another historic Mercedes, the “300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe”, was sold at auction for $143 million, making it the most expensive car in the world.

Although the W 196 is not as rare, its significance in motorsport makes it a unique and highly valuable piece for collectors.
