The trend of LED panels on vehicle windshields is illegal and poses risks (X @ZAMENZA)
A new trend is drawing attention on Brazil’s roads: LED panels installed on the windshields of cars and trucks that resemble eyes, similar to characters from the movie Cars, like Lightning McQueen.
These devices have become especially popular among truck drivers and even school vans, with videos circulating on social media. The panels, easily purchased online for around US$35, are USB-powered and allow for color and animation customization through apps.
Despite their visual appeal, the use of these panels is considered illegal and dangerous. According to the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB), installing prohibited accessories on vehicles results in fines, points on the driver’s license, and the vehicle being held until it is brought into compliance. The National Traffic Council (Contran) specifically prohibits the use of illuminated panels with dynamic or static messages on public roads, with the exception of public transportation vehicles, and only for displaying passenger information.
Beyond the infraction, the practice poses a traffic safety risk. Experts warn that these lights on the windshield can impair the driver’s visibility and distract other drivers, increasing the likelihood of accidents, especially at night.
