The crash that killed Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in the early hours of Thursday (3) was caused by a flat tire on a Lamborghini Huracán, Spanish authorities revealed.
The Liverpool player was on his way to catch a ferry back to the UK when the tire blew out, causing him to lose control during an overtaking maneuver and veer off the road, according to police.
After hitting a guardrail in the central median of the A-52 highway, the vehicle caught fire, killing Jota and his brother, André Silva, 25, who was also in the car at the time of the accident.
The player was driving a rented green Lamborghini Huracán at the time of the crash, but video footage showed the vehicle was completely destroyed in the fire.
The US$245,000 Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder Jota was driving can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds and reach a top speed of over 300 km/h.
The model, which became one of the Italian automaker’s most iconic supercars, was launched in 2014 to replace the Gallardo. That was until last year, when Lamborghini announced the Temerario as the Huracán’s successor.
