IWAYA INC, a Japanese technology company, revealed a stratospheric balloon system with potential military applications during the 2025 Technology Symposium, presented by the Japan Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency (ATLA) in Tokyo.

At the exhibition titled “Development and Prospects of High-Altitude Balloons for Multi-Domain Use,” the company described how stratospheric balloons could meet Japan’s defense needs in future missions.

The company added that it had recently identified “defense sector needs that were not previously expected” and observed a “security-related demand for high-altitude balloons.”

Beyond potential military applications, IWAYA intends to carry out “low-cost manned stratospheric tourist flights,” using a capsule suspended under a high-altitude platform capable of reaching the stratosphere.

The company also stated that it is evaluating additional applications, including “information collection and communication modules,” and studying the platform’s potential as a HAPS (High Altitude Platform Station) of the LTA (Lower Altitude Platform Station) type.

IWAYA explained that its high-altitude systems offer advantages such as “low cost,” “immediacy,” the ability to reach 20 km altitude in one or two hours, and “flexibility,” allowing payloads for observation, communication, or scientific missions.

According to the exhibition material, the company believes the technology “could become a valuable resource to support future multi-domain operations.”
