Japan has taken an important step in modernizing the training of its military pilots by ordering Beechcraft T-6JP Texan II aircraft, manufactured by Textron.
The contract provides for the initial delivery of two aircraft to the country’s Air Self-Defense Force, along with materials for pilot and maintenance crew training, with the aircraft expected to arrive in 2029.
The choice of the Texan II aims to replace the current fleet of Fuji/Subaru T-7 trainers, in use since the 2000s. The aircraft transfer will be coordinated by Textron in partnership with the Japanese company Kanematsu Corporation, and the agreement also includes the possibility of additional orders in the future.
Designed to prepare pilots for more advanced combat aircraft, the Texan II is a two-seat trainer equipped with a turboprop engine of around 1,100 hp, capable of reaching up to 519 km/h, flying at 9 km altitude, and covering up to 1,667 km. Widely used worldwide, the model has over 1,000 units in operation and has already surpassed 5 million flight hours in training programs across 15 countries and two NATO schools.
