The Japanese government has classified the GCAP (Global Combat Air Programme) as “extremely important” for the future of the country’s air capabilities, increasing political pressure to accelerate development of the new sixth-generation fighter jet.

The statement was made by Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi during a parliamentary meeting with Marco Zoff, CEO of Edgewing, the joint venture responsible for developing the aircraft through the partnership between Japan, the United Kingdom, and Italy.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Defense, the goal remains to place the new fighter into service by 2035. The program is expected to replace aircraft such as Japan’s Mitsubishi F-2 and the Eurofighter Typhoon used by the British and Italians.

The GCAP brings together companies such as BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. (JAIEC), which are responsible for the joint development of the platform and its advanced systems. Project priorities include next-generation sensors, integration with support drones, electronic warfare (EW), and a new propulsion system capable of supplying energy for future weapons and systems.

Despite political support, the program faces challenges related to scheduling and coordination among participating countries. In recent months, reports have indicated Japanese concerns over possible delays linked to budget disputes and differing priorities among the project partners.

The GCAP is viewed as one of the main military initiatives in Europe and Asia aimed at competing with future American and Chinese air-superiority programs, amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region and China’s rapid military modernization.
