Replacing the A129 Mangusta

This acquisition is part of the plan to replace the aging A129 Mangusta helicopters, which were introduced in the 1990s. According to Italian Army representatives, the total requirement is 48 AW-249 helicopters to ensure the complete transition of the attack helicopter fleet.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027, as outlined in the contract.

Development and Testing

So far, Leonardo has built four AW-249 units: one prototype and three pre-production aircraft. These helicopters will not be delivered to combat units but will be used for joint testing by Leonardo and the Army Aviation, focusing on the integration of new weapons and systems.

The AW-249 retains several visual similarities with its predecessor, the AW129, but incorporates significant technological and operational improvements.

Capabilities and Armament

The AW-249 features six hardpoints on the wings, capable of carrying:

  • Air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles (guided and unguided);
  • External fuel tanks, increasing the aircraft’s range.

Currently, the aircraft is equipped with a 20mm OTO Melara TM197B three-barrel cannon, and its anti-tank armament will consist of Spike missiles, manufactured in Israel.

Performance and Engines

The AW-249 is powered by two GE Aviation CT7-8E6 (T700) engines, each producing 2,500 hp (1,860 kW), providing greater power and endurance. The model also incorporates components from the AW149 transport helicopter, ensuring improved durability and operational capability.

With a maximum takeoff weight between 7,500 and 8,000 kg, nearly double that of the AW129, the AW-249 is designed to operate in extreme hot and cold conditions.

First Flight and Future Expectations

The AW-249 made its first flight on August 12, 2022, at the Leonardo factory in Vergiate, Italy. This new helicopter represents a significant advancement in the Italian Army’s offensive capabilities, combining cutting-edge technology with enhanced firepower and combat endurance.

With the arrival of the first helicopters in 2027, Italy is preparing to strengthen its attack aircraft fleet, ensuring greater efficiency and modernization in its military operations.
