Italy has taken another step to strengthen its naval capabilities by launching a search for a system installed in standard containers for deploying naval mines.

The initiative, led by the Naval Armaments Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, предусматривает the acquisition of a modern solution capable of operating with munitions already in service, including those used in training.

The new system will be designed to operate on several recent ships of the Italian Navy, especially those with structures adapted to receive containerized modules at the stern. With this, the naval force aims to expand its operational flexibility by incorporating mine-laying capability into both new and existing platforms, including multifunctional and support vessels.

Among the main objectives are increasing safety in the transport and storage of mines, as well as standardizing deployment procedures. The system will consist of two modules: one focused on transporting and deploying the mines and another dedicated to storage, with capacity for different models of naval armaments. Integration of a digital system for planning and evaluating operations is also planned, with advanced mapping and real-time monitoring features.

In addition to technical requirements, the project includes logistical support, crew training, and operational testing at sea before final acceptance. With an estimated investment of US$ 9.28 million and an execution period of up to two years, the initiative reinforces Italy’s effort to modernize its fleet and expand its strategic capabilities in the maritime environment.
