Israel will acquire a customized version of the Sky Warden light attack aircraft from L3Harris, locally designated as the Blue Sky Warden, under an agreement signed with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

The total number of aircraft has not yet been determined. Developed as part of Israel’s Light Attack Aircraft Program, the local variant will feature mission systems, hardware, and software specifically designed and integrated by IAI, which will also handle flight testing and certification with the Ministry of Defense and the Israeli Air Force. The Sky Warden is based on the Air Tractor AT-802U agricultural aircraft and was designated OA-1K Skyraider II in the U.S., in honor of the historic A-1 Skyraider.

The agreement between L3Harris and IAI includes the integration of advanced systems, including IAI’s open-architecture mission computer, providing the aircraft with capabilities tailored to Israeli operational requirements. The strategic partnership also extends to other projects, such as the Phoenix CAEW&C, a jet-based airborne radar system on the Gulfstream G-550, used in Israel, Italy, Singapore, and now selected by South Korea.

Sky Warden production in the U.S. has been expanded, but SOCOM’s annual orders have been reduced, reflecting adjustments in aircraft acquisition.

The Blue Sky Warden is designed for lower-intensity operations in permissive environments, complementing the already modernized F-15 and F-16 fighters in Israel. Equipped with advanced optical sensors and multimodal pods, it allows precise reconnaissance and strike missions while reducing collateral damage. Its ability to carry APKWS II rockets and potential integration of Spike NLOS missiles reflects lessons learned from recent operations against Hamas, Houthis, and Hezbollah, providing a more cost-effective and versatile solution for drone interception and tactical support to larger platforms.
