Ebrahim Raisi was on his way to the city of Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, after returning from an inauguration ceremony for a dam in the Iran-Azerbaijan border area with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.

The convoy included three helicopters. The other two helicopters, carrying Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian and Housing and Transport Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash, arrived at their destination without problems.

The helicopter made a forced landing due to problems in heavy fog near the city of Jolfa, approximately 600 km northwest of Tehran.

Among the passengers were Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Imam of Tabriz Mohammad-Ali Al-Hashem, the head of East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, the helicopter crew, and a security officer, according to Mehr News Agency.

Iranian Vice President Mohsen Mansouri confirmed the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and his delegation in the helicopter crash. The bodies of the victims will be taken to Tabriz, as reported by the head of the Red Crescent.
