Internet users have begun reporting a rather curious phenomenon on social media: mysterious burn marks appearing on the roofs of their cars with no apparent cause.
The cases were shared on Reddit and later featured in a video posted on Instagram by content creator and comedian Jason K Pargin. “This person said they stayed at a beach hotel and the next morning that mark was there on the visor,” he said in the video.
He then pointed to a screenshot of the Reddit post in question, which showed a burned streak running across the car’s visor as if it had been scorched by a laser.
Other examples included a long black burn mark running across the entire headliner of the car and, in more than one case, marks resembling cigarette burns.
Apparently, these cases are so common that many people have been “falsely accused of smoking in the car because they return it with a burn mark like that,” according to Pargin.
So what was the real cause of these burned cars? According to Pargin, the answer is as simple as leaving a reflective surface inside the car on a sunny day.

Pargin explained that a simple water bottle left inside a vehicle can act as the perfect tool to concentrate sunlight “like a magnifying glass,” melting and burning the interior of cars with a focused beam of light.
However, not all of these marks are caused by water bottles. As Pargin pointed out, the long burn marks that even ignited the roof were the result of a makeup mirror left on the passenger seat.
“Any sufficiently reflective surface” can produce this destructive effect, Pargin emphasized, adding that the moral of the story is that “it’s very easy to build a death ray.”
