The Indian government has approved the purchase of 97 new Tejas Mk 1A fighter jets, made in the country, in an investment of around $7.4 billion.

The order adds to the 83 aircraft already contracted in 2021, bringing the Indian Air Force’s future fleet to 180 units. The previous contract was valued at approximately $6.5 billion.

However, deliveries are facing delays. So far, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been unable to deliver any Tejas Mk 1A jets due to delays from the U.S. company General Electric in supplying the F404 engines. Only two engines have been delivered this year, although the contract specifies 99 units for the first batch. Still, HAL is maintaining its plan to complete all deliveries by 2031-2032, within the original timeline.

At the same time, India is working to expand the international reach of the Tejas. The country is in negotiations with Egypt, which is considering the purchase of 18 aircraft, and is reportedly willing to host a HAL maintenance unit to support the deal. Nigeria also appears as a potential buyer, reinforcing India’s strategy to export the fighter jet to strengthen its defense industry.
