An illegal street race involving around 200 participants caused complete chaos on the streets of Atlanta after young people shut down a city intersection on Sunday night (12).

As a result, officers from the Atlanta Police Department were sent to the scene at around 1:30 a.m. to deal with the crowd, which was “driving recklessly, blocking the roadway, drag racing, and performing illegal drifting maneuvers.”

A video released by police showed the crowd forming a circle around an intersection, recording with their cell phones while cars sped through, performing stunts that left several tire marks on the pavement.

Police had to chase after the offenders as some tried to flee on foot while others jumped into their cars to escape the scene. Officers then shut down the streets to stop the fleeing racers, according to the footage.

Eighteen alleged street racers were taken into custody and charged with various traffic offenses. The oldest was 25 and the youngest was 15, according to police.
Several firearms were recovered and vehicles were impounded as part of the investigation. “The Atlanta Police Department extends its appreciation to the Georgia State Patrol for its partnership and continued assistance,” the department said in a statement.

“Illegal street racing will not be tolerated in the city of Atlanta. Individuals involved in this activity will be arrested, charged, and have their vehicles impounded.”
