Honda has just unveiled the Base Station prototype, a towable camping unit designed to “democratize camping.”

According to information from Car and Driver, the Base Station features a lightweight design weighing just 680 kg, which means a large number of SUVs will be able to tow the compact camper, including the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.

With the roof raised, the Base Station offers 2 meters of headroom at its highest point. It features a foldable futon-style sofa that converts into a queen-size bed and an optional bunk bed, comfortably accommodating four people.

Inside the trailer, there is also a screen to operate functions such as ambient lighting, along with power outlets and heating for cold nights. In addition, the Base Station is compatible with a wide range of accessories.

In its base version, the trailer comes equipped with a heater and five windows, with the option to remove each window and replace it with Honda add-ons. At launch, Honda will offer a shower, kitchen, and air-conditioning unit.

An awning and an additional power bank are expected to arrive shortly as optional extras. Speaking of power, it is managed by a lithium battery and an inverter located beneath the futon.

The battery system can be connected to external sources, such as campsite hookups or generators, but otherwise it is recharged using solar panels integrated into the roof.

Honda has not yet provided an official price, but the automaker revealed it is aiming for the middle of the segment, which would imply a price between approximately US$ 20,000 and US$ 40,000.
