According to Rheinmetall, the German military purchasing agency, a contract worth €1.2 billion (US$1.3 billion) has been signed with the Short and Very Short Range Air Defense Systems Consortium for the development of the “Short and Very Short Range Air Defense System“, or LVS NNbS.

The ARGE NNbS consortium, composed of Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH, Diehl Defence GmbH, and Hensoldt Sensors GmbH, will collaboratively work on this project, with each company contributing to their respective workshare.

The primary goal of the LVS NNbS is to optimize medium-range air defense and create high-mobility air defense capabilities to protect maneuvering forces against aerial threats, even while on the move, such as kamikaze drones and cruise missiles.

Key objectives for this project include establishing a continuous network of individual components, integrating the medium-range guided missile IRIS T-SLM, ensuring interoperability, and expanding the interception zone to effectively deal with short-range threats.

The planned network will also facilitate connections with the fire units, IRIS T-SLM currently under acquisition, and the future acquisition of the mobile ground-based air defense system Skyranger 30.
