The German Ministry of Defense announced plans to acquire four MEKO A-200-class frigates as a temporary measure in response to delays in the F126 vessel program.

The decision aims to avoid operational gaps, especially in anti-submarine warfare capabilities required by NATO, while the main project faces uncertainties.

The F126 frigates, initially planned as a central part of Germany’s naval modernization, have had their timeline disrupted. As a result, the government began negotiating both the continuation of the program with Naval Vessels Lürssen and alternative options on the market. In this context, TKMS emerges as the supplier of the MEKO A-200 units, which could be delivered starting in late 2029.

To make the plan viable, the Budget Committee approved adjustments to a preliminary contract, allowing the industry to maintain production reserves and acquire essential inputs. According to the Ministry, this step is necessary while the final contract still goes through bureaucratic processes such as tenders, technical reviews, and parliamentary approval.

In addition, the German government is evaluating changes in the management of the F126 project, including negotiations with the Rheinmetall Marine Division Naval Systems as a possible new main contractor. Authorities argue that the dual strategy—combining progress on the F126 with the acquisition of MEKO units—is essential to reduce risks and ensure the Navy’s readiness in the coming years.
