Germany has launched a large-scale modernization program for its ground forces with the order of 274 new Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles, which will replace the current Fennek models.

The contract was signed between the German Armed Forces Acquisition Office (BAAINBw) and General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), following budget approval by the Bundestag. The first vehicles are expected to be delivered in 2029, with a total investment of 3.5 billion euros, including training simulators and logistical support.

The Luchs 2 will be built on the 6×6 Piranha platform and will feature state-of-the-art sensors, as well as advanced communication and data processing systems, to improve field surveillance and command capabilities. The project also includes an option to purchase an additional 82 units if the German Army decides to expand the fleet in the future.

Although the package includes the development of the weapon system, the 25 mm automatic cannons will be acquired separately through an agreement with Rheinmetall, which may supply up to 310 KBA model units. These weapons will be mounted on unmanned turrets developed by Valhalla Turrets in Slovenia and produced by Rheinmetall Electronics in Bremen. In parallel, engine manufacturer DEUTZ announced a partnership with ARX Robotics, aimed at integrating ground drone technologies into the future of German defense.
