Germany is set to significantly strengthen its artillery with the purchase of 229 RCH 155 howitzers, one of the most modern models in its category.

The proposal, estimated at $3.98 billion, will be reviewed next week by the Budget Committee and the Defense Committee of the Bundestag. Deliveries are expected to take place between 2028 and 2032, expanding the offensive capacity and mobility of the German Army.

The RCH 155 will initially be assigned to the newly created 215th Artillery Battalion of the 21st Tank Brigade, which will become the first unit of the Bundeswehr to operate the system. The battalion will follow the traditional structure, with three firing batteries and one logistical support battery. At the same time, Ukraine will be the first country to receive and operate the new German howitzer.

Developed on the chassis of the GTK Boxer armored vehicle, the RCH 155 features an automated, unmanned AGM turret, allowing operation by only two soldiers. The vehicle weighs 39 tons, carries 30 rounds of ammunition, and is equipped with an MTU engine producing 815 hp. Its firing range reaches 40 km, with a maximum of 52 km using V-LAP ammunition, and it is compatible with long-range projectiles like VULCANO and EXCALIBUR.
