Germany has taken another step in strengthening its military capabilities by approving the purchase of 1,744 new Wolf 2 vehicles, significantly expanding the Bundeswehr modernization program.

The $29 million contract is part of a much larger framework agreement, valued at around $440.8 million, signed with Mercedes-Benz to replace the old Wolf fleet. Overall, the country may acquire up to 5,800 units of the model, of which approximately 1,500 have already been contracted.

The first Wolf 2 prototypes were delivered in 2024 and underwent testing in 2025. Since then, production has picked up pace, with up to 30 vehicles arriving weekly at military warehouses. The first operational units are expected to be delivered to troops in the spring of 2026. The vehicle, based on the Mercedes-Benz G-Class 464 series, will be used by command units and military police.

With a gross weight of 4.5 tons, a payload capacity of 1.2 tons, and space for four fully equipped soldiers, the Wolf 2 combines mobility and ruggedness. Equipped with a 183 kW (around 249 hp) diesel engine and speeds over 100 km/h, the model is also prepared to integrate modern D-LBO command and control systems, reinforcing Germany’s focus on digitizing and modernizing its land forces.
