Germany is set to soon formalize a major contract to acquire 274 Luchs 2 reconnaissance vehicles, developed by General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) and based on the Piranha 6×6 platform.

The initial agreement will also include support equipment, training simulators, spare parts, and logistical services. The Bundestag’s Acquisition Committee, responsible for military purchases, is expected to review the proposal this Wednesday.

The planned investment exceeds $4.06 billion, covering the development, production, and operational support of the new vehicles. This measure is part of the Bundeswehr’s plan to replace part of its light vehicle fleet, specifically the Fennek, while modernizing its land reconnaissance capabilities. In addition to the primary acquisition, the German government is considering the option to order 82 more units in the future.

The weapon systems for the Luchs 2 will be acquired separately through a deal worth approximately $116 million with Rheinmetall, for the supply of 310 Oerlikon KBA 25mm automatic cannons, which will be integrated into remotely controlled combat modules developed by the Slovenian company Valhalla Turrets.

At the same time, the Bundestag’s Budget Committee has already approved funding for other modernization projects, including armored ambulances based on the Boxer platform.
