Germany has approved the purchase of 20 Eurofighter Tranche 5 jets for $4.35 billion, along with the development of the Eurofighter EK electronic warfare version.
The deal, authorized by Parliament in October 2025, includes deliveries between 2031 and 2034 and features new flight simulators for training on the fighter’s upgraded capabilities. The jets will be equipped with the European AESA ECRS Mk 1 radar, an active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology that will also be adopted by Spanish models.
The new Eurofighters will receive the Phase 4 Enhancement (P4E) configuration, which introduces upgrades to sensors, cockpit, and communication systems, along with automated sensor management to reduce pilot workload. The package also includes updates to the DASS self-defense system and features aimed at electronic warfare, gradually replacing the functions of the aging Tornado ECR, which still performs combat and electronic reconnaissance missions with the German Air Force.
At the same time, the government has continued with the Eurofighter EK project, a version specialized in Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). Airbus will be responsible for equipping 15 jets with the Saab Arexis system, AGM-88E AARGM anti-radiation missiles, and artificial intelligence technologies for fast detection and response to threats.
With an investment of $1.31 billion, the development is expected to be completed by 2033, solidifying the Eurofighter as Germany’s primary electronic warfare platform for the coming decades.
