Germany has selected the SPY-6(V)1 radar from Raytheon to equip its eight F127-class frigates, in a foreign military sales agreement with the United States Navy.

The contract includes not only the supply of the radars but also full technical support to adapt the system to the ships’ design and meet the operational requirements of the German Navy.

With four antenna faces, each equipped with 37 radar modules, the SPY-6(V)1 offers complete 360-degree situational awareness, allowing the Navy to identify and track aerial threats and missiles, including hypersonic weapons. The radar is part of the U.S. Navy’s SPY-6 family, already in operation on various ship classes, from destroyers to aircraft carriers, and is considered one of the most advanced and tested maritime systems in the world.

The system is produced at Raytheon’s Radar Development Facility in Andover, Massachusetts, a highly automated complex that combines manufacturing, testing, and radar integration 24/7. The facility is responsible for radar programs for both the U.S. and allied forces, ensuring high performance and reliability standards.

The adoption of the SPY-6 is part of one of Germany’s most ambitious naval programs in decades. The F127 frigates will replace older vessels and significantly enhance the country’s air defense capabilities, including protection against ballistic missiles, strengthening the integration of the German Navy into NATO’s air and missile defense architecture in Europe.

The budget for the program is estimated at approximately $30.6 billion, covering the construction of the ships and advanced weapons systems.
