The German Army is planning to purchase hundreds of thousands of camouflage blankets for war tanks from the Belgian company Sioen, according to the German outlet hartpunkt.

With the increased use of advanced reconnaissance tools like drones and satellites, troops around the world are having to come up with ways to hide their equipment.

For this reason, the goal of the Siocam camouflage blanket, by Sioen Industries, is to make it difficult, if not impossible, for the enemy to perform effective reconnaissance of military equipment in the field.

The acquisition of the blankets by the German Armed Forces would be part of the “Multispectral Camouflage Stationary Equipment (SMT)” project, launched in the summer of 2024 by the Bundeswehr’s Procurement Office.

The government is expected to allocate funds to finalize a contract for the supply of up to 219,261 sets of multispectral camouflage nets, divided by variants and sizes, as well as up to 104,536 sets of auxiliary equipment.

The Bundeswehr plans to establish a framework agreement with Sioen, through which it will be possible to order kits and auxiliary equipment for a total value of approximately 580 million euros, according to unconfirmed information published by Defence Blog.

It is worth noting that while camouflage blankets reduce the optical signature of military equipment and can make visual recognition more difficult, they are not as effective with radar or thermal imaging.

To complicate recognition with such systems, multispectral camouflage nets are used. These can conceal a signature in more than one spectrum, not just visual.
